Environmental Stewardship

Through its buying practices and industry associations, Great Lakes Veneer promotes sustained yield forestry. We encourage the harvest of timber to be ecologically sound. We belong to the following industry organizations:
  • Wisconsin Forest Productivity Council
  • Hardwood Forestry Fund
  • Smart Wood
  • Trees for Tomorrow
  • State Tree Farm Committee
  • Wisconsin Riverway Board
  • Michigan-Wisconsin Timber Producers Association (which also supports the Wisconsin Forest Industry Council)
Great Lakes Veneer has also recently been verbally approved for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). The goal is to work with nature to ensure the future of the nation's forest for our children and grandchildren. To find out more information about SFI please visit their website at www.afandpa.org . We purchase veneer logs from the following SFI certified suppliers:
  • Allegheny Wood Products, Inc.
  • Consolidated Papers, Inc.
  • Domtar Inc.
  • Fitzpatrick and Weller, Inc.
  • Georgia-Pacific Corporation
  • International Paper Company
  • Louisiana-Pacific Company
  • Mead Corporation
  • Nagel Lumber Company
  • Packaging Corporation of America
  • Pine River Lumber Company, Ltd.
  • Plum Creek Timber Company, Inc.
  • Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation
  • Timber Products Company
  • Webster Industries
We are also Smartwood Certified, chain of custody providers of veneer.

No part of the log is wasted. Our efficient process utilizes wood waste to power the plant while other byproducts are recycled into pallet construction and other useful purposes. Handling the resource more responsibly is the right thing to do, and not coincidentally, this helps Great Lakes Veneer control costs.
